Early Career

After graduating with a degree in law from the University of Texas, Darren Walker started a successful career in law at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton law firm. He then worked as investment banker at the Union Bank of Switzerland. Walker also held various positions at philanthropic councils, boards and foundations.


After leaving the corporate world, Darren Walker shifted his focus and started working as a volunteer at a Harlem School and assumed the role of COO at the Abyssinian Development Corporation. Major projects around the area took place including the construction of a community driven public school and 1,000 homes for poverty stricken families in Harlem. In 2010 he joined The Ford Foundation and by 2013 he became the president of the foundation.

As a beneficiary of the Head Start Program, Darren Walker understands the need for investment in improving opportunities for individuals. His passion for the cause and exceptional organisational skills makes Darren the ideal person for the role of president of The Ford Foundation. His responsibilities include overseeing US$12 billion in assets and US$500 million in annual grants.
